There are multiple potential sources of Leptospira infections in the region. Much of the area around Kapit Hospital has dense tropical forest and riverine systems rich in wildlife. This wildlife may introduce Leptospira into water systems. Most people live in longhouses or farm huts on the outskirts of the town of Kapit. Transportation is chiefly via boats on rivers. While Kapit is supplied with treated water, the source of the water in rural areas is either from river water or gravity fed rain-water-systems. Images here illustrate the living and transportation environments in which this study took place (photos provided by Dr. King-Ching Hii)
